What to Expect at Your Child's First Karate Class
Share
Your child has been asking about karate, you've signed them up, and now the big day is almost here. It's completely normal to feel a mix of excitement and nerves — for both of you! Knowing what to expect can make that first class a great experience instead of an overwhelming one.
At Phoenix Karate in Mississauga, we welcome new students every month. Here's a friendly, honest look at what your child's first class will look like.
Before You Arrive
- Wear comfortable clothing — For the first class, athletic wear (t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants) is perfectly fine. Once your child joins officially, they'll wear a karate uniform called a gi.
- Arrive a few minutes early — This gives your child time to take in the dojo, meet the instructor, and settle in before class begins.
- Leave shoes at the door — Karate is practised barefoot. This is a tradition that keeps the training floor clean and safe.
The First Class: Step by Step
Here's what a typical beginner class at Phoenix Karate looks like:
- Bow in — Classes begin and end with a bow. It's a sign of respect for the dojo, the instructor, and fellow students — and one of the first traditions your child will learn.
- Warm-up — Light jogging, jumping jacks, and stretching get the body ready and help kids burn off any nervous energy.
- Basic techniques (Kihon) — Instructors introduce simple punches, blocks, and stances. Don't worry if your child doesn't get it right away — that's exactly what practice is for!
- A fun drill or game — We always include something playful to keep energy up and make learning enjoyable.
- Cool-down and bow out — Class ends with breathing exercises and a short reflection on what was learned.
What Your Child Might Feel
It's common for kids to feel shy or unsure at first. Our instructors are experienced at making new students feel welcome. By the end of the first class, most kids are smiling and already asking when they can come back.
Some children take a class or two to fully open up — and that's completely okay. We meet every child where they are.
What Parents Can Do
- Cheer from the sidelines — Your encouragement means everything, even if it's just a smile from across the room.
- Avoid coaching during class — Let the instructor lead. It helps your child focus and builds their independence.
- Ask questions after — We're always happy to chat with parents after class about how things went.
